Advice:
I've tried to do planted tanks in the past with regular gravel as substrate, which never turned out well for me (I know plently of people do it, but for whatever reason, it just didn't happen). Now that I do have the "good" susbstrate... it's just a huge difference. Don't let the cost scare you away from the good stuff (IMO - eco-complete is the least messy option).

You CAN have a beautiful tank on a reasonable budget....do your homework on equipment!
Start with low/medium light if you are at all unsure about ferts, dosing and water chemistry.
