Just started so what I have learnt so far Research and understand what you are doing It is not just a few fish add water and wallah You are creating a habitat and if done properly will reward you. Plan your set up and go from there Cycle your tank!!! Read sites likes this they are a wealth of info suggestions and ideas

My Cichlid Tank Fully Cylced Stocked with 19 Malawi Cichlids
(Revised Plants and Background to highlite the Fish and rocks more ...Think it Has done the job.
Tried to keep it real by giving the fish lots of caves tunnels hiding spots and dark spots on different levels /depths BUT kept lots of "open water " and "open floor" so they can do their thing

This is my 120 Gallon African Cichlid tank. It has been in place about 5 years. It was once of the first tanks we had... now it is one of six that we have... can you say addicted?
By the way, the rating hint made in the rocks at left center was completely unintentional...

Started about 2-3 years ago with a small 180 litre bow front tank and now have 6 including a 143 gallon Hap & Peacock Show tank.

3 Cynotilapia Afra "Yellow Dorsal" [1M/2F]
5 Labidochromis Caeruleus "Yellow Labs" [1M/3F]
4 Labidochromis Hongi "Red Top" [1M/3F]
5 Melanochromis Joanjohnsonae "Exasperatus" [2M/3F]
6 Psuedotropheus Demasoni [?]
3 Psuedotropheus Kingsizei [1M/2F]
4 Psuedotropheus Msobo "Magunga" [1M/3F] (Wild)
but will soon have a change around and it will be home to just 3/4 species:
15-20 Melanochromis Dialeptus (only about 1-2" at moment.. will keep 3 males and remove excess)
25-30 Psuedotropheus Demasoni (24 are only 1-2" and as they mature will remove excess males)
4 Psuedotropheus Msobo "Magunga" [1M/3F] (Wild)
+ I have 7 Msobo "Magunga" Juvi's (will add one male and as many females I get from them)
also 4 Psuedotropheus Polit "Lions Cove" Juvi's I may add at some point. (hope to get a pair or trio from them)
Also have 5 other Malawi tanks with loads of species of Mbuna, Haps and Peacocks

healthy young colony of Labidochromis caeruleus, a new colony of Labidochromis sp. "Hongi", a couple of OB peacocks for color, and 6 killing fish that are growing out...
Corals/Plants:
a thick layer of green and purple algae that the mbuna LOVE to eat... i only get purple algae in this tank... maybe for the high PH... coraline algae maybe...???

Advice:
be carefull with sand... i had to cut the tube so that the main strainer touches the midwater skimmer, then i made the skimmer itself higher by cutting the bent intake tube... also, don't let the sponge for the powerhead be close to the sand... i had to raise it with an elbow...

filtered by two penguin 350 biowheel filters, and a 660gph under gravel jet system with fine sponge on the intake tube...
lighting is a home depot light fixture with two phillips 40w bulbs...
one large piece of egg crate cut to accomodate the undergravel jet system...
substrate is target play sand from home depot...
rock background is three tiles of slate made to fit...
aeration via 48" marineland flexible bubble wand powered by a whisper 100 pump...
heated by a 300w ebo-jager...
