Fire danger

by reefmac

I have a 50gallon acrylic saltwater reef aquarium with internal sump. This morning I woke up and went out to turn on the antic blues when to my surprise the tank water level had dropped and there was more water in the internal sump, I just figured the pump had become unplugged but when I looked at the power strip the top half was blackened and a few sockets had melted through, there was also some scorch marks on my tank stand and wall as well as ash all over my living room. I have no clue how but water must have gotten into the power strip. I am feel lucky that my house did not burn down but I have no clue why the power strip didn't shut off as it is one of those short circuit detection ones. My main question is how do I prevent this accident from happening again and also what type of pump should I get for my internal sump not that the plug has been destroyed?
