South American Cichlids do that all the time, but you have Africans right? Not sure if its the same for all cichlids.

Nearly all cichlids do it (my angels dont *L*). My maingano and electric yellows do. My old Oscars did it big time!
Its a cichlid thing

Yea my mainganos seem to do it more then any other cichlid I've got. It's quit cute and funny. Sometimes you don't even know they are doing it then all you see is a head spitting out sand everywhere. A JD at petland would move his entire tank from one side to the other. Keeps it all clean I guess.

Mine had no breeding partners they just did it allllllll the time non-stop. But I've learned to love it. I have to make sure that the base rocks I start my stacking with touches the bottom or they will dig it out til it all falls lol.
