generally from my reading the quality of a skimmer is dependant upon how long it is, because air is in contact with the water for a longer period of time the longer it is(your tank height will determine how long you can go). I havent purchased one yet but will when my livestock increases. The only way i see a skimmer not functioning properly is if its foaming up from water conditioners with aloe if you use such products. Thats all i can offer on the suject at this point in time

Thanks, I underestand the basics of skimmers as you have stated and that seems to be one of the major hurdles I am up against as a 20 gallon long tank is only 12 inches tall, not much room for the bubble column - I have been looking at nano skimmers but havn't made a comitment as of yet - thanks for the good words.

i would say overskim, if you plan on buying a skimmer buy one that will do 2 or 3x the tank size you have.
