Best cycle technique?

by Ryand639878

So next Sunday I am finally starting my 46 gal saltwater tank! You guys have always helped me out so I figured I'd get all your opinions. What is the best way to cycle a saltwater tank? I plan on buying about 25 pounds of live rock to start with, that is excellent figi rock, will that be enough to cycle my tank with some light along with it?

Chop up a dead shrimp from your grocer and throw it in. The cycle should start in about a week. Do you have a test kit to monitor the cycle?

Should i have the live rock in there while I cycle or wait till after? cuz won't putting a large amount of live rock in at once after cycle be a large bioload?

Did you already purchase LR? If so, put it in. If not, it wouldn't hurt to wait.

No i haven't added it yet. I'm setting the tank up on next Sunday and was planning on cycling with the Live rock.

You could add the LR but make sure the water is at correct temp.

I came to conclusion I'll follow your advice jdak and just do the shrimp, I'll put two or so shrimp in a mesh bag and wait. do you take the shrimp out once its all over or just when the ammonia spikes real high?

One shrimp is fine. Chop it until its minced. You could use a mesh bag but i added mine directly to the tank. The bacteria will feed on it and at the same time, it will rot creating ammonia. It won't sit at the bottom for long if you are worried about a mess. You should join aquaticconnection.com . I'm mostly posting there now. You will also get more help there than just me. Seems as nobody else knows how to reply here. I stick around here and try to drag over those who are serious. You could start a thread asking for help or even start a journaled thread all about your tank with pics. Anyways, did you get a test kit? The most important tests right now are ammonia, nitrates, and pH.
