Red Zebra Fry in Tumbler WOW!

by dizzcat

OK, so I moved the Electric Yellow fry to a breeders net because their egg yolk are all but gone now. They are cute! I can actually see some black in the dorsals of a few of them already! I finally got an accurate count when they all took a nap. 20 in all. The most mom has ever released is 14.

So, I caught Red Zebra mom and stripped her. The eggs just kept falling out! More and more and more LOL! This is only her second spawning and in all she had 32 eggs in there!! Last time she only released 10! I could tell she had a lot because of how full her mouth looked. Its a wonder she got them all fertilized, because every time the Male Yellow caught the mom and dad doin the dirty he broke it up hahaha. Guess they found a good hidy hole. I wonder if all of them would have made it in moms mouth if I had left them?

So, here are the eggs in the tumbler. 32 little Red Zebra eggs with teeny-tiny fry attached! You can see their eyes best. This is day 6 after the spawn.

Here is the Yellow kids almost ready to go into the 10 gallon. They still have a tiny yolk left.

dizz..I must know...do you feed all your fish oysters or something and if so does it have similar effects to what it does to humans?

I want some of those Electric Yellows. Can you put them in your transporter and beam them over? It's funny how all the zebra's hop at the same time. Like jumping on a trampoline with a bunch of little balls on it. But I agree wtih Tm. Bottle that water of yours, patent it and sell it for a fortune.

I have no idea what I do to get them all to spawn! I know Africans are easy to get fry from. My Bolivians are showing signs of spawning again soon. So I have 11 Bolivian Ram fry, 20 Electric Yellows, and now 32 Red Zebras. What am I gonna do with them all LOL?

What I do do that I think many people don't is when I do my water changes, about every second week I either take all the rocks out or most of them, then after I vacuum the water out I rearrange the rocks in a different way. So each time my tank is either drastically different or somewhat different. After the fish spend a few hours exploring thier new digs they tend to spawn if the female is ready. I have Acei females that spawn with each other all the time. I have one holding again today, but they are always infertile. Been looking for a male. When I do my Ram tank I will leave the big plants in place, but move the wood and rocks around. I just get tired of looking at the same setup all the time. And the fish actually enjoy checking out the new arrangements.

This is a picture of the most recent setup. This one got my Reds to spawn within a couple hours of doing it. I got some big chunks of lava/lace rocks, mostly thin pieces that I could create "bridges " with and they spawned under there. I also have black PVC pipe pieces that I put in first then cover them with rocks. They hang out in those a lot. When I caught the female last night I put in a divider and took out some rocks. She was hiding in a pipe, so I covered one end with a net and put my fingers in the other end, making her swim right into the net. I put the rocks back in almost the same way, with minor changes, but left the plants out, all except the fake grass on the sides.

Kelbri: the eggs don't actually hop, its the tumbler that does that. It simulates the way the mom will roll the eggs in her mouth. The air stone inside the tumbler gets air trapped against the lid and when it goes out of the small holes it creates the bouncing motion.
All day long you hear the tumbler go "bloop-bloop"
Here's a video of the tumbler in action, with the Yellow fry in it.

Makes sense I guess. Seems most of the instinctual parts of mating come when the fish naturally feel the time is right, like...water changes - nice fresh water with replenishing effects signifies rain I suppose, and the idea that them and their babies wont' be drying up in a puddle of mud anytime soon. That seems to be the most universal trigger amongst fish species anyway. Seems you've discovered a bonus. lol Maybe to them its like they're going into new territory with more food sources for the babies to munch on.

Huh, never thought of it that way, about the food. I was just watching my Rams a little bit ago and the female is starting to dig. So, time for a water change because it looks like she will be ready to spawn again soon. I am full up on places to put fry tho! Don't know what I am going to do if they do. Sheez!! Maybe its time to lower the temp in the tank so they will stop for awhile.

I had a group of Glowlite Tetras a while back (lost them all to ick) about 6 of them. They spawned all the time. It was fun to watch, they would roll together in a plant, sending eggs everywhere. The other fish ate them before long tho. I tried to catch some eggs, but never had any luck. I guess with fish like that the best way is put them in a tank, let them spawn and then take them out.
