HOB filter bulky shit.
SKIMMER gets rid of small unseen junk,
HOB SKIMMERS would recommend an octopus.
Never take your substarte out to clean it
Never take your LR out to clean it.
IT WILL KILL ALL THE GOOD SHIT ON IT.
The very most you should do, is maybe vacumm it, but only do half or even a 1/3 at a time.
Maybe google, bio cycle of a fish tank to help understand why it is important to not remove rock.

I had the same thing for a while and I grew to hate it. I still have remenants of the crushed coral....but its slowly being sifter out with a fish net. For some reason sand works a shitton (pronounced SHIT TON) better. :) New favorite word.

crushed cral is to large...............detritus and algaes get down in there and cleaner crews can't thus becomeing a breeding ground for bactierias and BOOM .................tank of death
believe it ...i destroyed my 20 long on the first go round with crushed coral and moveing to fast ................hard expensive lesson learned - - - thats why we stress taking your time in this hobby ....every single thing you do add or remove from your tank has an effect good or bad somewhere else in the system
and yes SHITTON BETTER is the proper descriptive for this .....lol
