can anyone please help?
i recently vigorously clean my aquarium as i was getting fed up of cleaning brown algae off the glass and sand almost everyday. i cleaned the sand vigorously to a point of mixing it up. my water is now cloudy and green as you can see in the pictures. its a 80 gallon with 48inch arcadia overhead luminare 2 marine whites and 2 actinics with 1 moorish idol about five inches, 2 three inch hippo tangs, 2 tru perculas, 2 black perculas and 2 anemone crabs no corals yet. does anyone know what could have caused this and how i may be able to solve it. i have 2 pictures before and now. please help my tank is 3 months old tomorrow. regards

well from what I understand stirring up sand like you did is BAD thing. Try throwing a 50 to 100 micron bag on the drain to the sump and check your levels cuz you might get a huge nitrate or nitrite spike from doing this. What happens from what I under stand is in sandbeds the bacteria uses anarobic processes to remove nitrates into nitrogen basacaly what you did is give all that bacteria oxygen and they are producing nitrates and the green water is an algae bloom because of the release of nitrates
Or its could just be all you ditrius that is in the water now and that can dround coral so can the algae
I'm not a pro with sand beds so that's my understanding of what might be wrong

how old is the tank? what type of filtration are you running? when and for how long are your lights on and their age? do you use RO water? what, how much and how aften are you feeding............
from there people can give you educated ideas on the fix
i'd say right off the bat, do a series of water changes - -16 gallons every other day for a week or so {10%} make sure it's premixed water and close to the same temp, feed every other day if your not already, keep the white lights to only a few hours a day, 1-2 in the morning and 1-2 at night - - - stay away from "instant fix" chemicals, this looks and sounds like a natural cycle that tanks go through

Yeah kind of need some info on you're filtration system, lighting timing, and if you're not using RO what are you putting in to " Age " the tapwater. How long have you had the Morrish? Those don't do very we'll in captivity, and most LFS's have banned selling them. 1 Hippo tang would prob be o.k. for that tank size, but keep an eye on them as they get bigger they can get aggressive.

my lights are on 9 hours everyday i used to used de-chlorinated tap water for about 2 months and i just had about spots of algae nothing more then for about a month now i have been using RO water after i got the moorish idol because i knew they were quite hard to keep. also i noticed using the RO water has caused the brown algae to increase. i have a big corner filter which as you can see was doing an excellent job on my pictures. i also have upgraded my lighting to the arcadia luminare you can see on my pictures but everthing was fine about 2-3 weeks ago when i upgraded. thanks very much everyone for trying to help

my guess here is underfiltration, lack of water movment, excess nutrients, and not fully cycled tank.
