Ok Im trying to decide if I should get Live rock or dryed out live rock!
If I chose the dryed out rock, how long would it take for it become live again?
Which one?

a couple of months... but again you have to have live rock and sand to seed it and start the process...
without it, it could take up to a year for it to get seeded completely...
i have 50lbs of base lace rock and 20 lbs of live rock... the tank has been running for two months now, and the lace rock is all colorfull now and started to get encrusted in coraline... so i'm thinking it's like 20% live now...

What if I set it up......then buy a little bag of live sand.
Then I can get all the cycle starters, and maybe two damsels?

buy the "dead Rock" and ask your LFS for a few pounds of the rubble in the bottome of their live rock tanks - - -still gonna be a couple months easy........fish won't speed it up any.....................i hope your not gonna cycle the tank with live fish...........bad husbandry IMO

Yea, everyone has a hard time resisting the first couple fish for a tank. It always seems like you want to liven it up, but in reality you are just making the water quality worse and threatening the life of the beautiful damsels. So I would fishless cycle it. It make take longer, but it will become more stable once you do add fish. It gives the micro organisms time to build up instead of making them reproduce faster to handle the waste of fish cycling.

ok, how about this!
What If I set a tank, then put the dead rock in... Then go to a LFS and buy about two good size chunks!
Then let it cycle for a month, with two fish!
Is that good?

sounds perfect except for the two fish ..........do what you said and in 6-8 weeks you could try a fish or two if your parameters are stablizing...............of course you can do what you want, but take it from someone who cycled wth fish and killed about 8 dams in a 20 gallon tank over a 6-8 week period of time, it's just not worth it...................
