Okay so here's where I'm at so far. Haven't added sand yet, just gravel for the bottom as I have seen in mostly all sand filters.Tell me what you think.

hmm... i would have the filter way above the tank... that way it doesn't need to force the water out of it somehow... it will just flow out...

above the tank?? um don't think that'll work with the way my tank is and where its at. i will however put it inside a 5 gallon bucket the first week atleast to make sure no leakage.

i'm just saying, if it's above the tank, the pressure inside the canister won't cause a leak... the pump has to work harder to push the water in and out of the canister if it's on the floor, or adjacent to the tank...
if it's above it, it does a overflow action thing...

whatever...

Not bad! If it leaks you could seal it all up with silicone and use a sponge filter on the intake ( I think you said you were gona do that) and it'll run for a while without needing to be opened. If gunk collects inside you could shake it vigerously and that will clean it to some degree.

they cost about $50 to make including the powerhead. As opposed to $200-300 to purchase online. You can also use an old pool filter. These are the same concept that pool filters use.

oh and gumbi i understand what you mean, and i wish it was possible for me to do this. however it is just completely impossible unless i spent more money on some kind of stand. and it would just look crazy with tubes running down. thats like a whole other project i dont wanna get into.
