GE Silicone 1

by a1k8t31524

ok so i have read several posts on this site about ge silicone 1 saying it is ok for use in aquariums.... in the middle of making my DIY wet/dry filter and while choking on the fumes i read the label and it says "not for use on surfaces that exceed 400 degrees or aquariums so is it safe or no, has anyone ever really used it before?

I know that some silicone has anti mold additives that may be toxic to fish. I have the same stuff and I wouldn't use it within the tank. I tried calling the company but the person on the other end wasn't of much help.

I'd just get the silicone that's for use in aquariums.

I can't say if you'll kill your fish or not, but at least let it dry for a few days. Maybe you could get the aquarium stuff and put a layer over the stuff you've already used so to block any toxins that could leech into your tank.

I use the home hardware brand regular clear silicon that specifically states that it is safe for aquarium use...has no added anti-mold stuff. But maybe that stuff is only available in Canada.

i hate buying stuff "made for aquariums" it is like .... lets duble the price and only give them half as much pisses me off its bs, $4 for 1 tube of the silicone vs like 8 for 1/4 the amount of the aquarium stuff. this is why instead of spending $200+ on a new wet/dry filter... or sump what ever you wanna call it i spent 25 at wal-mart and home depot and made my own.
