reef octopus
i got a reef octopus nw110 for my 40 gallon, the skimate it collects looks sort of watery compared to my old one, is this normal or do i need to make adjustments. and about how far should the return tube be sticking out of the water

i would turn down the air valve almost closed all the way. Let the skimmer run like that for a couple of hours and just keep watching it. If everything is controlled keep adding more air until you get the amount of skim that you want.

There is no air valve adjustment on the Octopus. It uses a needlewheel pump with a venturi at the inlet. Adjustments are made with standpipe/riser to adjust the water level inside the body.
Lower the stand pipe until foam/bubbles are at the base of the neck.
When you first turn on the skimmer, the bubbles should be at the base of the neck, You don't need the bubles all the way at the top when starting a new or just cleaned skimmer otherwise you'll get very wet and not very effective skimming.

yep, all it has is the silencer. is it ok to shorten the air hose, mines pretty long and the silencer weighs the tube down a bit and sometimes puts a pinch in the line

That's ok. I screwed up and used my NW200 in my exsisting sump without changing baffle height and it sits in about 12" of water.
5-7" is recommended so 8-9 is not bad. Even at 12" depth my NW200 still produces good skimmate and my tank is at 0 Nitrate.
There ar a bunch of mods for all the Octo skimmers but the very best is the increase in size of the venturi port and tubing. The vinyl tube has a very small id size and the port itself is too small. Carefully drilling out the vertical and horizontal port and replacing the tubing with a larger ID size helps a lot!
I'm on a customers PC right now. As soon as I hook back up my PC, I'll post a link to the mods I have described.
