Boss, if you live close to Rhinebeck NY there's a good chance I could come see you when I go to Ithaca next to visit my folks. I'll probably have my son and we'll rent a car and escape the parental units for a while. I've struggled most of my life just to get by and now I'm a registered and licenced respiratory therapist with lots of other credentials. I think it's almost time for me to really live, buy a house, travel with my son, and enjoy some fruits from my labors. I weened myself off the booze and the smoke thankfully, and that's no easy task given how much I consumed. I look forward to seeing the world with my son, get another catameran sail boat, build a basement N-scale railroad empire, go scuba diving, surfing, and go on long hike-in camping/fishing trips with the kid.

I just wish I was having an easier time getting work post school at a local hospital. It's no fun being broke.

Sounds like fun! I'll have my son, but he's a great kid and is really mature around adults, and/or depending on your daughters age he can hang with her. Adam is 8 and he's totally into science, fishing, and soccer, and he loves boats. He plays really well and I trust him. I haven't really been too into fishing lately unless it's catch and return. The last time I cut the head off a live trout it really traumatized me! I guess after keeping fish I've become a wuss about killing them.

LOL you should have seen the first time Christian, (my partner) was made to clean the fish he caught.... needless to say he wasn't happy but got through it and now is an ole pro at it, i make him clean all the fish i catch now too. LOL worth having someone with ya that will do the messy part for ya. mostly though here we do catch and release mostly, unless of course it's a monster pike or salmon. then they go in the freezer to either the taxidermist and then on the wall or for the grill.

That's funny. I used to put heads on and string up African hand drums as a hobby. I once went to a rendering service, a factory where they cut up and process livestock that have died in the field by disease or something, and they had all these cow, calf, and goat hides that I bought.

I bought like 4 cow hides, 20 calf hides, and 4 goat hides, and as the animals were dead for a while before skinning there was about an inch of meat still attached to the skins. I spent a day with all the hides out on a lawn carving the meat off them. I had to battle flies and all the little maggots eggs they were putting down. Pretty nasty. I salted like crazy and nailed them all up on the inside of a barn. They were cured after a few months.

I made the cow hides into a couple big JUN JUNS, big drums used for African drum ensembles to lay down the base rhythms. I used 55 gallon drums with the bottoms and tops cut out, had 4 steel rings made for each at a welders, and I wrapped the rings with cloth and strung the drums up with parachute line. The 2 heads were held on by sandwiching the skins, backbone of the animal's hide crossing the middle of the drum opening, between two cloth wrapped rings on each side exactly the way the African drum makers did, and the drums sold for $500 a peice.

Kinda off topic in an aquarium forum! Fun stuff though. These were some tough drums. I used to take a couple to big hippy gatherings and leave them out in the main meadow where guys would try to prove their manliness by pounding on them as hard and long as they could.

What memories!!!

Back to Aquariums!!!
