Why is live rock so beneficial?
From what I gather, it has beneficial bacteria in it, similar to the substrate in a freshwater tank? Have I got that right?

Yes, that's the gist of it. It's like a biological filter, to the point that some people just use live rock and a pump instead of an actual filter.

A biological filter is a good way to put it. And live rock also just gives off a natural appearance.

I always feel like with a lot of live rock that my tank is cleaner because of all the extra filtration. Of course, clean water is paramount when you keep more delicate fishes and corals so it's definitely something I would recommend.
