So on top of algae issues with this tank I also have a dirty looking sandbed. The clean up crew just isn't making a dent on it. Can I vacuum it? I"ve had this tank awhile and have never messed with the sandbed, I'm a little afraid to.

It should be fine to vacuum it...just don't overdo it. Vacuum small areas at a time so you don't stir it up too much.
