I bought my 55 gallon tank for $25 on craigslist. Then I got Lithonia four foot shop lights from Home Depot for $20 each and full spectrum T8 light bulbs for $8 for two bulbs. The stand was free from a garage sale. I used kitty litter substrate (pure baked ground clay, no fragrance or clumping chemicals added) and bought it for $4 for 25 pounds at Walmart. The plants were $30 total including shipping from sweetaquatics.com (great service, great plants, would recommend to others).
Result: A 55 gallon tank for around $100.

That's how much I paid. How much you pay is up to you.
Now that I have still not a lot but a little bit more money, I will say that it would be nice if the tank didn't have huge scratches on the glass from the lizard who used to live in it. *sighs* The pros and cons of buying used aquariums...

I found a 55 Euro Bowfront on craigs for $100 with a nice stand. This was a steal for the prices I was seeing... i would have felt justified and still "a good deal" at around $150... but then again I'm in the FL panhandle and it seems things are more pricey at times than elsewhere!
What have you found so far? Or what did you get?
Either way, good luck!
