Need Help on First Salwater Tank

by Ryand639878

So I have a forty six gallon bow front. I have been doing freshwater for a little over 6 years now and am planning on starting saltwater this week i believe and just would like some advice to see if my idea seems adequate. So for filtration I would use my marineland 350 double bio wheel hang on back filter along with fifty pounds or so of live rock. Just planning on having a FOWLR tank so no special lighting. And i would buy a powerhead just to get some circulation going in there. How does that sound? Open to all suggestions thanks!!!!

oo yeah and sorry i forgot to ask, what is best to cycle the tank? I have a friend with a great salt water tank, should i use some of his sand/gravel or water or both?

I have two powerheads. One on each side facing each other. Check my tank, it a 46 bow. Some of his sand would be great if he'll let ya. You should definitely take some of his water. Have him save his water change for you.

I would definitely recommend a skimmer with that. I started with a HOB filter, then moved up to a cansiter. Always used a protein skimmer though.

no... not at all. Mine has a powerhead hooked up and shoots bubbles up. Creating a dirty froth. It takes waste right out of the water.
