Painted on the outside... Its an acrylic tank too so trying to sand or chip the paint off wouldn't work very well. My only thought was to buy the black backgrounds and somehow bury the bottom portion in the sand and figure out how to adhere the top...

What about a solvent paint remover of some sort. Be careful to keep it out of the tank, try a spot as it might melt the acrilic, etc?
Even if it blurrs the acrilic, it's the back, so it might be oK. Maybe call a paint company about paint removers and acrilic?
