yeah get some plexi paint it black on the top side and have someone you know trace out the broken pieces and cut it to fit .....................if you can't find anyone send it to me and ill build you one bud,
try lowes or a local mom and pop lumber yard, they might do it for a small fee, but it's still got to be cheaper than a new hood - -email glass cages . com maybe too

Guys around here are using PVC screening for windows and such. Framing it up with some PVC pipe.......cement your pipe and stretch the screen over it. Its lightweight.....cheap......lets all the light in.......and fish cant jump out.

shipping tape or duct tape if you can't see it or just make it two removable pieces instead of hinged

so you guys reccommend just getting like 1/4 in pvc, cutting it to the outline of the tank, and just using the screen on the top of it and painting it black? sonuds easy enough, i have dremmel that would do nicely on the pvc, is it so lightweight that a bigger fish like a tang would be able to jump and knock it out of place or anyhting?

that would be a pretty impressive fish, if he can knock a 1/4 inch piece of plexi that big off your tank and then still follow it out................lol
yes definately do it yourself, its fun and rewarding not mention cheap..........hehehe
i would suggest since i know you have a dremmel now that when you get the plexi at lowes pick up a bunch of the lil sanding drums for it and then when you trace it out and cut .............make it 1/8th to 1/4 inch bigger all the way around and then sand {shave} it into shape....this gives you a little room for error when you cutting and you'll have a very smooth edge when you done fitting it
good luck bud, you can do it
