adeh -- RCS do not harm live plants, very innocuous little critters. However, the fish you have would likely make a meal out of the RCS. If you do decide to have a tank just for the RCS, they need a fully cycled tank and the water quality must be maintained or they will die off. When I decided to breed shrimp I wanted to do RCS and Blue Pearl. These two can interbreed so they require separate tanks. I set up two 10 gallon tanks, did a fishless cycle on each, then added the shrimp and all is well. I change the water weekly. Otherwise they are very low maintenance. They just do their thing. They eat all types of fish food and especially sinking pellets specifically for crustaceans. I feed mine a varied diet, but one of the things I feed are these little pellets called "Crab Cuisine", they love them. They eat like pigs and scurry to the food as soon as it is dropped in. They are much more fun when kept in their own tank -- when fish are present they hide a lot. You could probably get a used, small 10 gallon setup complete on craigslist cheap....

ya I noticed that and thought it was funny, Guppies and RCS are up in the four dollar range and one of the easiest fish/shrimp to breed

I have 4 tanks. 55 is my African Mbuna tank, 30 is my planted Bolivian Ram tank. Then my 20 gallon is for my bigger fry, has Red Zebra and Yellow Labs right now, about to go to the store soon and a 10 gallon that I put tiny fry or holding mom's in. Right now it has 15 Ice Blue fry and a mom about to release her batch.
I started with the 20, then needed a 10 for Bolivian Ram fry, then got the 30 for Africans, but they outgrew it. It always starts with just one :-)
