sure..if you feel like losing fish and portions of the bacterial colonies that keep them from sucking in their own waste.

the filter serves 2 main purposes:
1. it cleans the water
2. it adds air to the water
so turning the filter off at night isnt the best idea, but if you have to turn if off it prolly wont kill them over night, iv lost power and my fish have been fine, but it was only for about 8 hours.
if its the sound of the water bugging you try raising the water level so its closer to where it pours in quiets it down alot

I turned mine off everynight for a year and it was fine, other than the water getting dirty quikcly, lots of water changes
just get a canister, havent turned mine off since

i have to say if anyone is turning filters off because of the noise they make i would think real long and hard about why your in this hobby ..............i don't mean to step on toes here at all, but thats just bad husbandry the fish we keep depend on us without choice to keep them alive, healthy and comfortable........it s a big responsability...........my tank has a skimmer running, fans on the light sysytem a wet dry filter with return pumps and powerheads ...............noise is just part of the hobby .............you wouldn't block the exhaust pipe of a car with a potatoe becuase it was noisy..eh?

my grandma loves the sound of my tank....its right outside her door for her room.....she says it puts her to sleep. You get used to it after a few weeks.
