1-2 pounds per gallon is another rule of thumb
also depends on what your plans for the tank are ...............some people don't have any live rock..........others have 5 pounds per gallon
i believe 1 pound per gallon with a light fish load is good for natural filtration and self sustaining systems {after they are established}

if your filter is really good you could get away with 40 to 45 pounds, if your going for a freindly fish community, but if you like corals than you need alot of rock, something like 50 to 65 pounds of it would work then. tell me what your thinking about putting in your tank. fishfreako

skimmer skimmer skimmer ................if your going to get into corals get the best skimmer your budget will alow..............1-2 lbs of rock per gallon, 4 inch sand bed and a decent canister if you like them ..............sump filters are the way to go acording to a lot of people.....i don't own one but the fluval FX-5 seems to get a lot of good reviews from the people that do own them, as far as a canister goes
