Lighting

by Deltasigpony3648

Ok so in about a month i am going to drop some mad loot and upgrade my whole system from 55 to 120 and i am getting some mixed advice.

i read the conventional lighting requirements is 3-5 wpg or 3-7 wpg

and then i was told with the amount of advancements with lighting that this was cut down and my lfs guy who swears that a 6 bulb tek light at 324 wpg will be more than enough

what do you guys think

I say you should go with a nice HO bulb or VHO bulb. and that depends on the depth of water. you can have too much.....or too little.....I have to much.....at 10.3
watts a gallon. My water doesnt heat at all.....but I have a few softies that I bleached. VHO is the way to go. if its a high output.....it could be enough. It has to be a very intense lighting which are only VHO,metal halide, and HO. If your going to run 3.24 watts per gallon you need those intense bulbs. pc wouldnt cut it neither would NO. I would say go with a nice VHO set up. reason for this is....if your running VHO's on a 120 and its 48" long. You can run 440 watts over it. cheaply.....like 200 bucks for the kit cheap. Now thats for a kit, you would have to put your own cannopy on it.....but thats a ton of light for the money. Not only that.....VHO bulbs are a LOT cheaper than Metal Halide.......but you wont get the shimmer metal halides have. So I say....go big or go home. Im going to start keeping sps when I get my filtration right......and 300 watts over my 29 gallon is SWEET. its bright, thats for sure. With that much light you could hold ANY coral you want. just my opinon. :)

PLUS....bulbs are cheep.....so its not 80 bucks a bulb to replace its more like 85 for all four bulbs.

t 5s are taking over , some write they are better then halides, they last 16 months and dispearse light better.and bulbs are 20 bucks or less. t5s will also grow sps no problem... t5s have my vote..when i get my new light it will be t5s

yeah i want to go t5 for sure i was reading up on the tek system. it seems that their reflectors are 95% efficient and its boosts the output by 300% or more so that why i think the lfs said i could go with lower wattage and still have enough lumens that enter the tank
