Good or Bad Idea?

by nicholas542

I think I am going to do something useful with my Marinland powerfilter. Untill I start a sump I'm going to turn my powerfilter into a small refugium. I found a place to get some red mangrove shoots, and I have some extra sugar sand. I'm not sure if the water flow will be too strong to be a succesful refugium though. Any feedback would be great.

yeah I thought one piece on medium live rock and some mangrove shoots to cut back on the Nitrates would be a good idea

Right on seems like a better use of a powerfilter in a reef aquarium. I heard that Bio-wheels create more nitrates than they reduce. Someone told me that powerfilters where freshwater technology and not any good in saltwater aquarium keeping anyway so I'm going to convert it into a refugium.

Maybe, not sure on your bacteria build up yet, but I suggest that you don't just take away the filtration in just one hit. Maybe reduce the media slowly, once a week, to allow the bacteria to replenish. JUST A THOUGHT

Yeah i'm going to leave the powerfilter for now. I'm getting one of those new hybrid filters that Snowboss was talking about. So that will give me something to experiment with, and hopefully keep my hands out of my tank.
