i would want to make a bead filter... i think i should for the ponds... those are uber low maintainance...

I tried to put the fine quarts sand in the protein skimmer and it all washed out into the tank. That bead filter looks like a sand filter with larger beads instead of sand.

well yes it is... but the bead filter can be back washed... it gets rid of all of the gunk... it's more for like mechanical cleaning than biological...
and i would reduce the GPH of the protein skimmer there pete...

the beads are made of some porus plastic balls... they're really light... i don't know if they float or not... i doubt it...
