So how do you grow the "live" part of live rock?

you get dead rock... and put it in the tank... then on top of it or somewhere were there is current, you put some live rock to seed said dead rock... it's pretty simple... my lace rock is starting to get pretty with different types of coraline algaes...

Nice.....I could start my live rock/lace rock in a 20 gallon for a few months and then put everything, sand and live rock into a 55 gallon at a later time without problems right?

Moving to a different tank won't mess anything up I'm guessing.

you're still gonna have to take it easy on the 55... you can't rush SW with LR...

I can't affore corals and fish right now, so i'll have the live rock curing for at least a few months. I was wondering if moving the sand from one tank to another will hurt it. Am I stupid, or does the sand become "live" too?

the sand will become live as well...........if you have a 20 laying around, pack that sucker up with some airstones at the bottom and let her run, practice water testing, do regular changes etc etc .............as far as moveing the rock and sand.............no it shouldn't be a problem, you'll just want to treat it as if you just brought it home...............in other words, when you move it to the 55, wait a few weeks, monitor it, let it cycle and then start stocking as you want to

note: you should really have good lights on the rock while your "growing" it.........the bactierias and algaes are mostly photosythetic

I went to a river bed today that I was at a couple weeks ago and instead of there being a river there was no water at all except for a few small pools that were drying up. The sad thing was that there were hundreds of fish, some six or more inches long, dieing. They were on their sides gasping. It was horrible.

I guess the city lets water out of a dam upstream to fill lower reservoirs periodically and fish get trapped when the water stops.
